What is it?
Since 2005, the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of New Jersey has allocated 0.7% of the annual Diocesan budget for use towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a mission priority of the Episcopal Church. The Diocesan Council has approved a Matching Grant Program administered by the Diocesan MDG Task Force to promote awareness of the MDGs and focus on people facing extreme poverty throughout the world. The program encourages local parishes, individuals, or other Episcopal organizations, to support the MDG Goals. Grants up to $750 per project, may be approved for 2014/2015 on a matching dollar basis. These matching grant funds do count toward the Diocesan fundraising goal.
How does it work?
The applicant decides which partner organization to support. The partner organization must:
- be affiliated with the Episcopal Church or have an Episcopal Church endorsement
- operate outside the United States
- empower its community members
- have an IRS registered 501(c)(3) designation
The applicant must explain how the project is helping the applicant community become more aware of how others live and respond to God's call, reaching out to the world's most vulnerable, focusing on the MDGs. The MDGs are eight targets set in 2000 by the leaders of over 180 nations, including the United States, to eradicate extreme global poverty. The targets relate to hunger, poverty, health, universal education, environmental and economic sustainability, and global partnerships.
The Grant Committee will review applications on a rolling basis throughout the year, but no later than November 2015. Grants must be spent in the calendar year awarded.
